The Queen v RG
RG was a 23 year old male charged with 'recklessly destroy/damage property' contrary to the Crimes Act 1900. This offence carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 5 years. RG pleaded guilty at the earliest available opportunity and was sentenced at Waverley Local Court.
Mr Cole represented RG and encouraged him to take positive steps in his rehabilitation, including paying compensation to the victim, as well as undertaking some drug and alcohol rehabilitation services. He was ultimately placed on a good behaviour bond pursuant to section 10(1) of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999, for a period of 18 months. This allowed RG to avoid a criminal conviction. This was a good result for RG as his crime was assessed as within the mid-range of objective seriousness, and with regard to the maximum penalty.
